It comes with a neat shut-off tap that cuts off the supply tothe quarter inch pipe. So it's useful when changing the cartridges.
Most undersink 15mm pipe in the UK is copper and accepts a simple self-cutting / saddle valve to connect your water filter.
But increasingly plumbers are fitting plastic pipes under sinks. The problem is you cannot use a saddle valve on a plastic pipe to connect your water filter.
With this adapter you can cut into your 15mm plastic pipe and place this adapter in line. It allows you to "T off" into a 1/4 inch OD tube.
